At the CSU Arboretum/Woody Plant Research Area, students determine which plants grow best in the Rocky Mountains and other forested areas. More than 1,100 different types of growth are found in the area, many marked with display signs telling what they are.
Due west of Fort Collins, Lory State Park offers a wealth of outdoor activities to visitors. Situated beside the Horsetooth Reservoir, spend time fishing, boating, water skiing and doing various other activities. A number of trails wind through the park, which are frequented by hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers in the summer cross-country skiing in the winter.
CSU Annual Flower Trial Garden is used to research how flowers develop under various environmental conditions. More than 1,000 varieties of plants are used in the gardens, which also contain a gazebo, some nurseries and other facilities.
Edora Park spans 65-acres and offers an indoor swimming and ice-skating complex. Other park amenities include picnic shelters, playground, trail access, basketball courts, fishing, tennis courts, BMX track, skate park and fitness course. Sledding and cross-country skiing are available in the winter.
